ResumoDiamond-like carbon (DLC) films have unique properties for biological and medical applications due to their excellent biocompatibility, chemical inertness, and superior mechanical properties [1]. These films are used as biomaterial for medical devices, but the bacterial adhesion to these devices is the first step in the development of medical infections [2]. In this paper, we investigated the bactericidal properties of DLC films modified with oxygen plasma. DLC films were deposited over 316L stainless steel substrates using a Pulsed DCPECVD discharge of methane gas. The films were subjected to oxygen plasma treatment during different times. DLC structural quality was evaluated by using Raman scattering spectroscopy. AFM images were acquired to verify the morphological differences among the samples during all surface treatment and deposition processes. The measurements of the contact angle were performed by a sessile drop method with contact angle measuring machine and the surface energy was calculated. Bacterial adhesion and antibacterial activity to the modified DLC coatings was evaluated with Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) which frequently cause medical device infections. Also, a comparison with an unmodified surface will presented.
